Your first home server: what to buy (and what I'd skip)
Here’s the guide I wish I’d had before I bought my first home server: I went straight for a big rack server, then a bigger one, before working out that the right answer for almost everyone is a small, quiet box that costs less than a nice pair of headphones. This is what actually matters when you’re buying your first one, which units I genuinely run, and the expensive detours you can skip — because I already took them for you.
I’ll be honest up front about my bias, because it’s earned: I now run a small fleet of mini-PCs, not a server. That wasn’t the plan — it’s where I landed after the power bill and the noise taught me a lesson. So this guide is opinionated, but every opinion in it is paid for.
The short version: for a first home server, buy a small fanless mini-PC — an Intel N-series box (N95/N100/N150/N5105 class) with 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD. New, that’s roughly $120–$150; bought used, less. Skip the rack servers, skip anything with “Xeon” in the name, and don’t buy extra power for “one day.” Put Proxmox on it and you’ve got a real home server that costs a few dollars a year to run. What a “home server” actually needs to be
The phrase “home server” makes people picture a humming tower with blinking lights. Drop that image. A home server is just a small computer you leave on, running services for you — a media library, a website, backups, a dashboard, a private AI model. For a first one, the job description is short: run a handful of things reliably, quietly, and cheaply.
That last word does most of the work. A server that’s on 24/7 is a device whose running cost matters more than its purchase price. A machine that’s twice as fast but draws five times the power is a worse first home server, not a better one — you’ll feel it every month on the electricity bill and hear it every day from across the room. Cheap-to-run beats powerful, at this stage, almost every time.
I bought the expensive lesson first
I jumped straight into the deep end. My first home server was a Dell PowerEdge R715 — a proper rack server. Then I “upgraded” to an HPE ProLiant ML350, which is a genuine beast of a machine. And that was the problem: it was too much of a beast. It drew far more power than my actual workload justified, and I was nowhere near using what it could do. I’d bought capacity I was paying to keep switched on and never touching.
That’s when it clicked. Instead of one oversized machine sitting mostly idle, I broke everything up into nodes — several small mini-PCs, each doing its share. The payoff was immediate and measurable: my power bill dropped, while I still got good speeds and full access to all my applications. The only real trade-off is a bit more network noise — more devices talking on the network — which is a fine price for the savings.
So when I tell you to start small, it’s not caution for its own sake. It’s the conclusion I reached after buying big twice. You get to skip both steps.
What to actually buy for your first one
Here’s what matters, in the order it matters, for a first home server:

Notice what’s not on that list: raw CPU power, huge storage, expandability. Those matter for a big build. For a first one they’re mostly ways to overspend. Get 16GB of RAM and a low-power N-series chip, and you have a machine that will happily run a dozen small services.
The mini-PCs I actually run
Not a spec sheet — the actual boxes on my shelf, what I paid, and when. Every one of these was bought with my own money (no samples, no loaners), and all five are still in service:

New or used?
All five of mine were bought used — three of them in 2026 alone — and I’d do it again. Mini-PCs have almost nothing to wear out — no spinning fans under heavy load, no mechanical drives if they’re SSD — so the used market is a genuinely smart way to get more machine for less. My oldest unit is a 2019 HP ProDesk mini that’s still in service, which tells you how much life these have in them.
If you buy used, two sensible checks: confirm it powers on and posts before money changes hands where you can, and plan to put a fresh drive and OS on it anyway (you were going to install Proxmox from scratch regardless). Buying new is perfectly fine too — you’re paying a small premium for a warranty and certainty. For a first machine either is a good answer; don’t let the choice stall you.
What NOT to buy
The mistakes here are all the same mistake — buying more than a first server needs:
- A rack server (Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, anything rack-mount). I owned two. They’re loud, power-hungry, and they’ll teach you to resent the hobby before you’ve run a thing. This is the detour I’m most keen to save you.
- Anything with “Xeon” in the name, for the same reasons — it’s server-grade power and heat you won’t use at home.
- Buying big “to grow into.” You’ll pay to keep that headroom powered on for months before you touch it — if you ever do. Buy for what you’ll run this year; add a second cheap node later if you need it. That “add another node” path is exactly how my fleet grew.
- A mini-PC as your LLM box. Be clear-eyed: these N-series machines are not the ones for running local AI models, and not for heavy, sustained workloads. If that’s your goal, you want a stronger machine with a real GPU — a different guide entirely.
The one gotcha to know before you buy
There’s a well-known quirk in some of these low-power N-series chips (the N100/N5105 class): a C-state bug that can freeze the machine at random. It’s a CPU-level issue, not a bad unit, and it’s sneaky — the box keeps running fine until it drops into a deep sleep state, at which point it silently stops responding. You get no warning; you only find out when you go to open something and it’s dead. That silent-failure behavior was genuinely the most frustrating thing I hit across the fleet.

FAQ
How much should I spend on a first home server? Around $120–$150 for a new N-series mini-PC with 16GB and a 500GB SSD, or less used. You genuinely don’t need to spend more, and spending more usually buys power draw you’ll pay for monthly.
Is a mini-PC really “a server”? Yes. “Server” describes the job (running services others connect to), not the size. A $130 mini-PC running Proxmox is a real, capable home server.
8GB or 16GB of RAM? 16GB. RAM is the first thing you run out of when you run several services at once, and it’s the cheapest upgrade to comfort. Every box in my fleet runs 16GB or more — it’s the one spec I don’t skimp on.
How much power do these actually use? A small fraction of what an old rack server draws — the whole reason I switched to them. (I’m logging exact figures for the fleet and will publish them in the roundup.)
Should I buy a Raspberry Pi instead? A Pi is lovely for one or two small always-on jobs, but for a first general home server that runs many things at once, an x86 mini-PC is the more capable, less fiddly choice. Keep a Pi for side jobs.
New or used? Both are fine. Used is a smart way to save (three of mine were), since mini-PCs have little to wear out — just plan to wipe and reinstall regardless.
